“Do you know where you’re going
to?” is a line from an old song. In this ever changing world, finding
directions and determining ones location are of prime importance
to many activities. Different kinds of technologies have tried of
master the art of navigation and positioning. The U.S. Department
of Defense’ keen interest on a super precise form of worldwide positioning,
led to the development of the Global Positioning System – something
that has created great impact in the field of navigation.
So the GPS has military origins.
Some of its military applications include minesweeping, aircraft
landing and infantry operations. Its effectiveness in battle was
clearly demonstrated during the Gulf War.
The GPS easily found its way
to the commercial and consumer fields. It has found its way into
cars, boats, planes, construction equipment, movie making gear,
farm machinery and laptop computers. Experts foresee its commercial
growth in the coming years due to the continuous technological
advances. For instance, the advent of VLSI technology in the semiconductor
chip industry likewise has positively influenced the GPS technology.
It has caused a reduction in size and cost of GPS receivers.
